DollarMap exists to answer one question honestly: what does this really cost? This page explains who writes our guides, the rules every guide follows, and how we keep money from advertisers away from what we publish.

Who writes and edits our guides

Every guide names its author, with a link to their profile, credentials and other work.

  • Sepehr Parsa, founder and editor, writes and edits our guides on cars, home repairs, budgeting, saving and investing.
  • Parastoo Parsa, writer and researcher, writes our guides on family life, pets, travel and weddings.

The rules every guide follows

  1. The answer comes first. The price is in the first two sentences.
  2. Every number has a source and a date. Sources are listed at the end of each guide, with the date shown on the source page. If we cannot source a number, we do not publish it.
  3. Our own math is labeled. When we calculate something, such as cost per year or a monthly payment, we write “our calculation” and show the inputs.
  4. Primary sources first. We prefer government data and well-known industry surveys over opinion.
  5. Plain language. We explain terms instead of using them to sound clever.
  6. No invented people. We do not publish made-up testimonials, quotes or case studies.

Our full research process is on our method page.

Updates

Each guide shows when its prices were last checked. We review every guide at least once a year, and sooner when a major source publishes new figures. Our monthly cost index is updated every month.

Independence from advertisers

DollarMap is free to read and is supported by advertising and, in some places, affiliate links. Advertisers and partners never see a guide before it is published, cannot pay to change a number, a ranking or a recommendation, and do not choose what we write about. Read our advertising disclosure for details.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, we fix it, note the change in the guide, and log it on our corrections page. Tell us about an error on our contact page.

Not advice

Our guides are general information to help you plan. They are not personal financial, legal, tax, medical or veterinary advice. For decisions about your own situation, talk to a qualified professional.
